Description
These instruments originated in Africa, specifically with the Shona people of Zimbabwe. During the 1980s, musicians exploring other musical cultures found the thumb piano or Kalimba and brought it to the world stage. Many cultures have now adopted the instrument, including the Indonesians. Made from a coconut, this instrument is fun. The face of each one is hand-painted with a jaunty, colorful design. The tines are firmly attached with screws and the gourd provides good resonance. Each piano is 6 inches across the face, about 3 inches deep and has seven keys each with a different tone. Each gourd piano is hand-painted so you will not receive the piano pictured. Designs include: dolphin, turtle or gekko.
