Get out on the river! Here on New Jersey’s west coast, the Delaware River offers recreation in the form of tubing, kayaking, and boating. Big Bear Gear River Tubing offers tube rentals and transportation Memorial Day through Labor Day. Be sure to reserve in advance. Big Bear Gear is also the place to head if you want to rent a canoe, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard. Conveniently located across the street from Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park, it is easy to slip in and enjoy a day on the water.
Speaking of the canal, the Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park runs right through Lambertville. The 70-mile-long park is a delightful path along the canal. You can hop into the park on Bridge Street or at the end of many streets in Lambertville. From there you can walk, jog, or ride a bike to enjoy amazing scenery all year long. With over 160 species of birds sighted in the park, a walk along the canal is a delight. The Canal Commission hosts special events throughout the year.
Two wonderful family activities just outside of Lambertville are Howell Living History Farm (609-737-3299), which offers seasonal, authentic, period farm activities from 100 years ago, and Holcome Jimison Farmstead (609-397-2752), a museum featuring memorabilia and buildings from Hunterdon County’s farming past.
Howell Living History Farm offers exceptional Saturday programs with activities ranging from a popular Fall corn maze to caring for animals to making brooms and harvesting ice. All activities are hands-on and family friendly.
